CAIRO, November 28, 2011 (AFP) – Ahmed Harara lost one eye in the revolt that toppled Hosni Mubarak, only to lose the other during protests to oust the military rulers who took power after the fall of the veteran strongman.
Photos of Harara’s chiselled face — a patch on each eye — were quickly circulated on social networking sites, galvanising opinion against security forces’ brutal methods to quell the mass protests that left 42 people dead.
In spite of himself, Harara has become the latest hero of Egypt’s revolution.
“I don’t want to be a symbol. The real symbol is Tahrir Square and the protesters there,” said the 31-year-old dentist.
Surrounded by friends, an emotional Harara carved a path through the thick crowd of Tahrir Square — the symbolic heart of rallies that ousted Mubarak — which he can no longer see.
Everywhere he goes, he is applauded, congratulated, cheered, kissed. Behind him, a banner reads “We are all your eyes, Ahmed Harara.”
On January 25, Harara joined hundreds of thousands of Egyptians calling for political and economic reforms in efforts to end Mubarak’s 30-year-rule.
Three days later, during fierce clashes between protesters and security forces, a police shot claimed his eye.
“I was hit by birdshot in the head, the neck and the right eye. Shrapnel damaged my retina,” Harara said.
He was also hit in the chest, causing internal bleeding which plunged him into a three-day coma.
“I was treated at the Cairo International Eye hospital. Then I stayed home for two months,” he said.
But even after losing his eye — and his job — Harara insisted on joining protesters 10 months later, this time in a bid to bring down the military council that took over when Mubarak was chased from power in February.
On November 19, when the latest round of clashes erupted between protesters and police, Harara headed into Mohammed Mahmud, the flashpoint street leading from Tahrir to the heavily fortified interior ministry.
This time, a rubber bullet took out his second eye.
Harara is by no means the only one to suffer eye injuries during the protest.

Egypt’s Tahrir Square protesters have put a 5000 Egyptian pound reward for anyone who leads them to the police officer who was featured in a video shooting protesters in the eye.
The officer, identified as Mahmoud Sobhy al-Shenawy, 24, a 2009 graduate from the police academy, was featured in a shocking video that was circulated by online activists and in it he aims a rifle and shoots at protesters, only feet away, hitting one in the eye and then being applauded by the surrounding soldiers.
“You did great Basha, you nailed his eye,” said a soldier in the video.

Having lost an eye in both revolutionary waves, Harara has become “a living martyr” of the revolution that led to the elections that begin on Monday, says his friend, artist Mohamed al-Jbeili.
“I did much less than others during this revolution,” insisted Harara.
“They are all heroes, the protesters in Suez, Mansura, Assiut, Damietta… they all want the ouster of the military,” he said.
Pages in his honour were set up on Facebook: “We are all the hero Ahmed Harara” and “Let’s rename Mohammed Mahmud to Ahmed Harara Street.”
Harara says he has no regrets about joining the protests.

Thank you, Kenzo, for your response. I shake my head in sorrow when I think of the tragic history of Palestine, and, in general, the history of the entire Middle East. Christians, Muslims and Jews lived together in Palestine peacefully for centuries, even after the Christian Crusades. Christians conveniently forget the fact that the crusaders raped, pillaged and killed other Christians and Jews during the Crusades, as well as Muslims. I continue to think that the Crusades resulted from the split between the Eastern and Western Churches in 1054, when the Pope and the Metropolitan of Constantinople condemned each other to Hell (declared each other “Anathema”). A mere forty years later, Pope Urban unleashed the robber barons of Europe on the Middle East, and the Eastern Church had become fair game, resulting, ultimately, in the crusaders’ sack of Constantinople in 1204.
I also think that the split between the Eastern and Western Churches, and the Crusades, only happened because of Jewish infiltration of the Church. The Jews infiltrated Christianity from the very beginning. I don’t think that Christianity would have even become the state religion of the Roman Empire under the Roman Emperor Constantine if Jews hadn’t infiltrated the Church and sought to use it to control the minds of humanity, using the power of the Roman state to enforce its will. The LAST thing Jesus would have wanted was for his followers to form an alliance with “Caesar.” Such a thing contradicted everything he taught.
Some of my ancestors were French Jews who were forced to convert to Catholicism centuries ago. I think that was the best thing that could have happened to them! Christians also conveniently forget that, according to the Christian New Testament, Jesus called those who had gained control of ancient Israel, the Pharisees and Sadducees, disciples of Satan. The Pharisees, the ancestors of modern rabbis and the authors of the Talmud, liked to tell Jesus, when he upbraided them for their hypocrisy and deviousness, “We have Abraham for our father.” Jesus retorted, “Your father is the Devil, and it is his lusts that you fulfill.”

Jesuit Extreme Oath of Induction
The following is the Jesuit Extreme Oath of Induction given to high ranking Jesuits only. This oath is taken from the book Subterranean Rome by Carlos Didier, translated from the French and published in New York in 1843.

When Jesus made that statement He was speaking of murder, not self- defense. And, I do not consider protecting ones self against savages as being an act of murder. That said…I do, however, agree with your statements about deadly, US activity, especially in the middle east and particularly in compliance with Zionist aims and Zionist policy.
In 1948, when the Zionist state was born, the US had no enemies to speak of in the area. Even Jews and Arabs got along in friendly terms, even babysitting each others children. However, when the Communist/Zionist took hold changes occurred and now the world hates both of us.
Unfortunately, with the terrible weapons we face today, as you say, we are all in a state of possible destruction. Does this mean we stop defending ourselves and fighting for our rights? Should we just give up and surrender to the evils of this world?? Do we really have any choice in the matter? Are we destined to self-destruct. Kenzo Brazeale, not taking up the sword is a beautiful sentiment, and it’s very true. Those that take the sword DO wind up perishing by it. Unfortunately, the American republic was born in blood, and, as Thomas Jefferson said, it must occasionally be maintained and/or reestablished by the shedding of blood: “The tree of liberty must be frequently watered with the blood of patriots and tyrants,” he said. This is also true of people in all countries ruled by tyranny. Tyrants never give up power willingly. They must be forced to do so by the people. Thus, though taking up the sword often, even usually, results in the death of those that do so, it is sometimes necessary. We in the United States are now faced with a situation in which our own government has become an iron tyranny that oppresses and kills its own people, and is oppressing and killing people in other countries in enormous numbers. To prevent yet more people worldwide from being murdered by our criminal government, to hopefully forestall a world war our government is apparently about to start, a war that would kill most of humanity, and to prevent our own deaths at our governments’ hands, we are coming to the realization that WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING, and I can tell you, what we do won’t be in conformity with the teachings of Christ!
When our forefathers revolted against British tyranny, they faced the armed might of the world’s only superpower at that time. The entire world thought they were insane to take on such overwhelming military force, and believed they would be easily defeated. Instead, they fought on, and eventually won, even though many of them were killed, and others lost everything they had, including their families and homes. One of those, a patriot who was wealthy before the Revolution, lost everything he had, several large homes, and even his entire family. When he was asked if he would do it again, he said, “Yes, absolutely!” He, and the other American patriots who fought in the war, had come to the conclusion that it was better to die, or to lose everything one had in the struggle for freedom, that it was to submit to slavery.
Today the people of the entire world face this situation. Tyranny is descending on everyone, all over the world, and it is a tyranny so complete and terrible, that all the tyrannies of the past pale in comparison. Because of the technology and resources available to modern tyrants, even the THOUGHTS of people will be available to them. In other words, humanity faces annihilation of everything human inside them. If we allow the total victory of this tyranny, humanity as we know it will become extinct. So, we must fight. Our own lives, and the lives of all our descendants depend on it.

Al-Shenawy must be a damn good marksman! I understand that most police trained in baton rounds firing are lucky to hit a man in the torso, much less in the eye! It may have been he who blinded Harara, but of course we can’t be sure. I tend to believe that “what goes around, comes around,” or, as the Christian Bible has it, “As you sow, so shall you reap.” I’ve seen it happen many, many times. Al-Shenawy will get his, eventually. Maybe he’ll get it in the eyes, too.
In fact, all of this police and military repression and oppression will ultimately result in death for the perpetrators. The longer it goes on, the worse and more merciless the people’s reprisals will be. They will all be hunted down and executed, or torn limb from limb. There are far, far more of us than than there are of them, and when we finally realize that, they will be as good as dead.
